How Biofilter Treatment Systems Work: A Practical Guide

A biofilter septic system achieves secondary wastewater treatment by passing primary-treated effluent through a filter medium that supports a living community of microorganisms. Unlike an AWTS (aerated wastewater treatment system) which uses mechanical aeration, a biofilter is largely passive, it does not require an aerator motor running continuously, which means lower energy use, fewer mechanical failure points, and in some configurations a simpler maintenance schedule.

Stage 3: Disinfection

This final disinfection step brings the system up to Class B or Class A effluent quality depending on the design.

Stage 4: Land Application

As with AWTS, the treated and disinfected effluent is applied to a land application area, drip irrigation subsurface lines for most residential applications, or surface spray on larger rural blocks where Class A quality and Council approval allow it.

  • Persistent wet patches on the filter surface
  • Odour from the filter area
  • Effluent quality readings at service showing high turbidity or BOD

Common Biofilter Issues

Textile filter clogging (short-circuiting) Over years of operation, channels can develop in textile or peat-based filter media where effluent preferentially flows, bypassing much of the medium. This reduces treatment effectiveness. Detected at service by uneven surface wetting or poor effluent quality results. May require media replacement earlier than expected if loading has been excessive.

UV lamp failure (disinfection stage) UV lamps have a finite service life (typically 12 months) and must be replaced annually regardless of apparent function, UV output degrades before the lamp visibly fails. Your service provider should check UV output at each service.

Pump timer or controller faults Intermittent dosing relies on a pump and timer. If the timer fails and dosing becomes continuous, the filter can become waterlogged and anaerobic. If the pump fails, no effluent reaches the filter and it will back up into the primary tank.
