Worm Farm Septic Systems: A Practical Owner's Guide

A worm farm septic system uses a bed of composting worms to treat household wastewater rather than relying on a conventional septic tank and absorption trenches, and the honest answer to whether they work is: yes, when correctly installed, maintained and matched to the right household, they perform well. The equally honest caveat is that they carry unique management requirements and a narrower range of approved products than conventional systems. What is a worm farm wastewater system?

A worm farm wastewater system, sometimes called a vermifilter unit, replaces the conventional septic tank with a buried vessel containing a deep bed of composting worms. Household sewage, including toilet waste, enters the vessel and is processed directly by the worm population. The worms consume organic solids at a rate that, in a healthy system, keeps pace with a typical household’s daily input.

The treated liquid that drains from the worm bed is called vermifiltrate or worm-processed effluent. It is dosed to subsurface drip irrigation lines in the yard, very similar to the disposal method used by an AWTS. No large secondary septic tank is needed in the traditional sense, though most units include a primary chamber to prevent raw sewage surging directly onto the worm bed.

NSW Health accreditation of sewage management facilities applies to vermifilter systems, meaning only units that appear on the NSW Health accreditation list can receive a Section 68 approval from a NSW council. This narrows the field considerably.

How vermifiltration treats household effluent

When sewage enters the vessel, earthworms in the processing bed ingest organic solids and microorganisms, breaking them down into worm castings (vermicast) and a liquid fraction. The worm castings remain in the bed and accumulate slowly, while the liquid drains through the media and is collected for disposal.

Unlike an AWTS, which uses electrically-driven aeration to sustain aerobic bacteria, a vermifilter relies on the natural activity of worms to keep the media from going anaerobic. Worms tunnel through the bed, maintaining porosity and oxygenation. The result is an effluent quality that is generally comparable to AWTS output, with lower pathogen and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels than a conventional septic would produce.

The process requires the worm population to remain healthy and appropriately sized. A household that pours bleach, paint thinners or large amounts of antibacterial cleaning products down the drain can collapse the worm population, stopping the treatment process entirely.

Worm farm servicing and desludge intervals

The main servicing requirement is monitoring the worm bed condition, usually done by opening the access hatch and checking moisture levels, worm population density and the depth of accumulated vermicast. Most manufacturers recommend an inspection every six to twelve months by either the owner (following the product manual) or a qualified service agent.

Unlike an AWTS, worm farm systems do not have a mandatory quarterly servicing cycle imposed by most NSW councils, which can significantly reduce running costs compared to an AWTS service contract. However, some local councils may impose conditions on their approval-to-operate that include periodic service agent visits.

Vermicast accumulation is a slower process than sludge build-up in a conventional septic tank; desludge intervals of five years or more are common on well-maintained systems. Dosing pump maintenance is similar to any other subsurface irrigation system: inspect the filter, drip emitters and timer annually. A failed dosing pump is the most common mechanical fault and is usually straightforward to replace.

When a worm farm system is (and isn’t) a good idea in the Hastings

Worm farm systems suit acreage or hobby-farm blocks where chemical inputs into the wastewater stream can be well controlled. A household with a consistent, moderate water use pattern, minimal antibacterial product use and someone willing to check the worm bed periodically is a good candidate.

They become less suitable in the following situations:

Holiday rental or short-let properties. Guest turnover means unpredictable water load spikes and guests using whatever cleaning products they brought. Do councils in NSW accept worm farm systems?

Yes, provided the specific unit model appears on the NSW Health accreditation list for sewage management facilities. A council cannot grant a Section 68 approval for a non-accredited product. Check the current accreditation list before selecting a unit.

Do worms freeze or die in cool NSW winters?

On the Mid North Coast this is rarely a problem because winters are mild. In alpine areas of NSW, worm population decline in winter is a known issue. Vermifilter units are typically insulated and installed below frost depth, which buffers against temperature extremes.

Does a worm farm system still need to be pumped out?

Infrequently, not never. Vermicast accumulates over years and must eventually be removed by a licensed liquid-waste operator. The interval is typically much longer than a conventional septic tank’s three-to-five-year cycle, but it is not zero.

What happens if the worm population dies?

Treatment stops. Untreated effluent passes through the bed and enters the drip irrigation system. The signs are usually odour from the unit and poor-quality effluent. The system needs to be rested, the dead worm bed removed, and fresh worms re-established before it can process waste again. This can take weeks, during which you need an alternative arrangement.

Can I maintain a worm farm system myself?

Basic checks, such as opening the hatch, checking moisture and looking at worm population density, can be done by the owner following the manufacturer’s manual. Anything involving the dosing pump, electrical components or waste removal requires a licensed operator.
