Sand Filter Septic Systems Explained

A sand filter septic system is a two-stage treatment setup where effluent from a conventional septic tank is dosed onto a graded bed of sand before it reaches the final absorption trenches or drip field, and it is one of the more common secondary-treatment options on older coastal properties across the Mid North Coast. What is a sand filter septic system?

An intermittent sand filter is a secondary treatment unit that sits between the primary septic tank and the land application area (typically absorption trenches or subsurface drip irrigation). Unlike an AWTS, it has no blower motor or electronic treatment cycle. Instead, a pump doses settled effluent from the septic tank across the surface of a lined gravel and sand bed at controlled intervals throughout the day. The sand media provides both mechanical filtration and a biological environment where bacteria break down remaining organic matter and pathogens before the effluent moves into the soil.

The filter bed is typically 0.5-0.9 m deep and lined on the base and sides to prevent direct escape to surrounding soil. Underdrains collect the filtered liquid and gravity-feed it to the disposal area.

How the filter bed treats effluent

Treatment happens in two overlapping ways. Physically, the fine sand pores strain out suspended solids that passed through the primary septic tank. Biologically, a biofilm of aerobic bacteria colonises the upper sand layers. Because the dosing is intermittent, the bed gets rest periods between doses, keeping the upper zone aerobic and the bacteria active.

A recirculating sand filter takes this further: a portion of the treated effluent is pumped back to the top of the bed and dosed again, increasing the total contact time with the biofilm. This produces cleaner output and allows a smaller bed footprint, which matters on tight coastal blocks near the Camden Haven estuary. When Port Macquarie-Hastings Council may require secondary treatment

PMHC generally requires secondary treatment where the conventional septic-plus-trench combination cannot meet the environmental performance standard for a given site. Common triggers include:

  • Soil with poor or excessively rapid percolation (sandy coastal profiles that let insufficiently treated effluent reach groundwater quickly)
  • Setback distances to waterways, wetlands or environmental land that leave insufficient buffer for conventional effluent
  • High seasonal water tables in low-lying coastal areas such as parts of Bonny Hills, Lake Cathie and the Camden Haven floodplain
  • Upgrades to an existing non-compliant system where the site cannot accommodate AWTS drip irrigation

The council does not mandate a specific secondary treatment product; it specifies the effluent quality outcome required. Sand filter running and desludge costs

Sand filters have lower ongoing costs than AWTS units because they have no blower motor to run continuously and no mandatory quarterly service contract. However, they are not zero-maintenance.

The biggest hidden expense is sand media replacement: the sand becomes clogged with biofilm and fine solids over time, and once flow rates drop to the point where effluent ponds on the surface, the media must be excavated and replaced. This is a significant job, typically requiring an excavator, and it is worth asking about bed condition when purchasing a property with an existing sand filter.

Common sand filter faults and warning signs

Ponding on the filter surface. If effluent is visible pooling on top of the sand rather than soaking in, the media is approaching the end of its life or the dosing rate is too high for the current permeability. Reduce household water load immediately and arrange an inspection.

Odours from the filter area. Some biological smell is normal during dosing cycles, but a persistent strong sewage odour usually indicates anaerobic conditions developing in the upper sand layer. This can happen when dosing rates are too high or when the rest periods between doses are too short.

Dosing pump alarm or failure. A sand filter relies on timed pump doses. If the dosing pump fails, the primary tank fills to overflow point and raw sewage can either back up into the house or overflow to the surface. Regular inspection of the dosing pump chamber is worthwhile.

Blocked distribution laterals. The perforated pipes that spread effluent across the filter bed can become root-blocked or scale-blocked. Uneven wetting of the filter surface is a sign of partial blockage.

Sand filter septic system FAQs

Does a sand filter replace the septic tank?

No. The primary septic tank is still needed to settle solids before effluent reaches the filter bed. The sand filter is an additional secondary treatment stage; it does not handle raw sewage directly.

How long does sand media last in a filter bed?

Typically 10-20 years, depending on household load, water use patterns and whether the system has been properly maintained. Consistent over-dosing shortens media life significantly. Have the media inspected if you notice ponding or a drop in effluent quality.

Can I convert a sand filter system to an AWTS?

In most cases, yes, subject to a new wastewater management report and a Section 68 approval for the new system. The existing primary tank may be reusable. An AWTS will then require quarterly servicing and add an ongoing electricity cost, so compare the long-term economics carefully before converting.

Do sand filter systems need council approval?

Yes. Like all on-site sewage management systems in NSW, a sand filter requires Section 68 approval to install and an approval to operate. Any upgrade or change to the secondary treatment component also needs approval.

What happens if the sand filter fails during heavy rain?

Heavy rain can raise the water table to the point where the filter bed is temporarily saturated, stopping percolation.
