A septic system backing up into your house is one of the most alarming plumbing events a homeowner can face. Sewage at the toilet base or coming up through shower drains means the system is overwhelmed and the blockage needs to be located and cleared fast, not just for comfort, but because a sewage overflow is a public health and environmental compliance issue in NSW.

A septic backup has four main causes: a pipe blockage between the house and tank, a full tank, a failed outlet baffle, or a saturated/failed absorption area. Each has a different fix. Diagnosing where the backup is coming from
The location of the backup gives you the first clue:
All drains slow or backing up simultaneously: The problem is downstream of the house, in the tank, the outlet, or the absorption area. This rules out an internal blockage.
Only one or two fixtures affected: More likely a blocked drain inside the house or in the sewer line between the house and the tank. A licensed plumber with a drain camera or jetter can confirm.
Toilet backing up but showers and sinks fine: May indicate a partial blockage in the toilet branch or a full tank with no capacity left in the tank inlet side.
Sewage coming up through inspection risers or at the ground surface near the tank: Tank is overfull or the outlet is blocked.
Wet ground or pooling near the absorption area with slow internal drains: The absorption area is saturated or failing.
The five most common causes of septic backup
1. Tank is due for a pump-out
The most common cause. If the sludge and scum layers in the tank have built up to the point where there’s no effective liquid volume, incoming waste has nowhere to go. A pump-out is the immediate fix, but if this is happening frequently (more than expected for your household size), the tank may be undersized for current usage or the household is sending too much water through the system.
2. Blocked inlet or outlet pipe
Tree roots, grease buildup, accumulated solids, or a collapsed pipe section can block either the inlet (between house and tank) or the outlet (between tank and absorption area). Signs include: backup appearing very quickly after the system was recently pumped, or sewage backing up even though the tank appears empty on inspection.
Fix: A licensed plumber with a jetting unit or drain camera will locate and clear the blockage. Persistent root intrusion may require pipe relining or pipe replacement.
3. Failed outlet baffle
The outlet baffle (a T-shaped pipe fitting inside the tank at the outlet) prevents floating scum from exiting into the absorption area. If the baffle has corroded, broken, or been dislodged (common in older concrete tanks), scum can escape, clogging the outlet pipe or the absorption trenches. A failed baffle is a common finding in tanks that haven’t been inspected for many years.
Fix: Replacement of the baffle, a relatively inexpensive repair done at the time of a pump-out and inspection.
4. Saturated absorption area
In the Hastings region’s high-rainfall environment, absorption trenches can become saturated during extended wet weather, particularly in the January, April wet season when cumulative rainfall can exceed 400-500 mm in the hinterland. When soil is already at field capacity, it physically cannot accept any more effluent, causing the system to back up.
This is different from a permanently failed absorption area: if the backup resolves after dry weather returns and the drains work normally, the system may be functioning as intended but unable to cope with the combined hydraulic load of household wastewater plus saturated ground. If the backup persists into dry weather, the trenches have a more serious problem requiring assessment.
5. Permanently failed absorption area (biomat)
Biomat formation can permanently reduce absorption capacity. Once severe biomat is established, no amount of dry weather will restore full function. You’ll notice slow drains even in summer and persistent wet patches over the drain field regardless of rainfall.
Fix: Remediation or replacement of the absorption area, requires PMHC approval and a qualified assessment.
What to do right now if your septic is backing up
Step 1: Stop using water-intensive appliances, dishwasher, washing machine, baths, to reduce the hydraulic load on the system immediately.
Step 2: Identify visible symptoms outside (surface ponding, odours at the tank or absorption area).
Step 3: If sewage is actively surfacing or overflow is imminent, call for an emergency pump-out. Do not allow sewage to enter any stormwater drainage, waterway or neighbouring property.
Step 4: If safe to do so, check inspection lids on the tank (do not lean over open septic tanks, hydrogen sulphide gas is odourless in high concentrations and can cause rapid incapacitation). A visual check confirms whether the tank is full.
Step 5: Book a pump-out and inspection. After pumping, a licensed contractor can assess the tank internals (baffles, walls), camera-inspect the outlet, and advise on absorption area condition.
Emergency septic situations: NSW obligations
Under the NSW Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, allowing sewage to overflow onto the surface, into a stormwater system, or into a watercourse is an environmental offence.
