The three ways a wrong flush damages a septic
Before the list, it helps to understand the mechanism of damage. Not all wrong inputs cause harm in the same way:
Mechanical clogging. Solid items that do not break down (wipes, rags, paper towels, sanitary products) accumulate in the primary tank, block the inlet baffle, and eventually overflow into the trenches as bulk solids. Trenches are not designed to filter solid material, and once they are solid-loaded, they fail.
Biological kill. Bleach, disinfectants, antibacterial cleaners and some medications kill or suppress the bacterial population in the tank that makes treatment possible. A tank with a compromised microbial community produces less-treated effluent, loading the trenches with higher-strength liquid. Occasional moderate use is usually fine; systematic daily heavy use is not.
Trench and soil damage. Fats, oils, grease and some chemical compounds pass through the primary tank and enter the absorption trenches, where they coat the aggregate and soil pores. Never-pour list: fats, oils, paints, solvents
These items cause trench damage through grease accumulation or soil chemistry alteration.
Cooking fats and oils: Bacon fat, pan drippings, deep fryer oil, cooking cream. Even small regular quantities accumulate over months and block the tank inlet and trench aggregate. Collect in a container, allow to solidify, and dispose in the bin. For liquid oils, check your council’s preferred disposal method (some accept cooking oil for biodiesel collection).
Food scraps: If you have a kitchen waste disposal unit (in-sink grinder), it is worth reconsidering its use with a septic system. Chopped food waste greatly accelerates sludge build-up, shortening pump-out intervals considerably.
Paint and paint washing water: Both oil-based and water-based paints contain compounds that pass through to the trenches and affect the soil. Wash brushes into a bucket, let it settle, pour the clear water away and take the solid sediment to a waste disposal facility.
Solvents, turpentine, mineral spirits: Highly toxic to tank bacteria in even small quantities. Dispose of at a council waste facility.
Petrol and diesel: Should never enter any drain under any circumstances. Hydrocarbon contamination of the trench zone and soil can permanently affect water quality in surrounding ground.
Pool and spa chemicals: Chlorine in large quantities kills tank bacteria. Saltwater pool backwash can affect soil structure in trenches. Do not drain pool backwash or chemical dosing water to the septic. Connect pool waste to a dedicated garden watering zone, if council permits.
Medications and hand sanitiser
Medications, particularly antibiotics and antimicrobials, pass through human digestion and into the tank in their active form. There is no practical alternative disposal method for this (toilet disposal is the least-bad option from an infection control perspective), but it is worth being aware that a household member on a heavy antibiotic course may need the tank’s bacterial population a little longer to recover. This is not a reason to avoid medication; it is context for understanding why the tank can sometimes seem less effective for a few weeks during or after a course.
Hand sanitiser, used in normal domestic quantities, passes through in quantities too small to meaningfully affect the tank. However, during the COVID period, some households were using hand sanitiser at industrial volumes. Excessive alcohol-based sanitiser pouring into the drain should be avoided.
Old medications should not be flushed or poured down a sink. Most pharmacists have a return scheme: take expired medications back to the chemist for proper disposal.
Pool backwash, softener brine and roof washdown
Pool backwash: Pool filter backwash water contains chlorine and sometimes algaecide. Large volumes (from a full backwash cycle) can disrupt tank biology and carry chemical load into the trenches. Discharge to a suitable garden area rather than the household waste drain.
Water softener brine: Where water softeners are fitted, the brine discharge can increase salt load in the system. High salt concentrations affect the soil structure in trenches, reducing permeability over time. Check with your council whether water softener discharge to an on-site system is acceptable in your area.
Roof and driveway washdown: Washdown water from roof areas that have been treated with moss killer or mould treatment products should not be directed to the septic. Similarly, driveway washdown from areas where vehicles have dripped oil or fuel should not enter the septic system.
Safer swaps for common household products
You do not need to buy expensive “septic safe” branded products. Most standard cleaning products used in reasonable quantities are fine. The issues arise from heavy, systematic use of particular ingredients.

Can I use bleach if I have a septic tank?
Occasional, moderate use of bleach-based cleaners (toilet cleaning, spot disinfection of surfaces) is unlikely to cause significant harm to a healthy tank. The issue is systematic daily heavy use: if you are bleaching the toilet twice a day and wiping every bench surface with a bleach spray, the cumulative effect over months can suppress tank bacteria. Use bleach-based products as needed, not as a daily habit.
Is it safe to use in-sink grinders with a septic system?
Most septic specialists recommend against in-sink food waste disposals with on-site sewage systems.
