Garden Design Around Your Septic System: Safe Planting and Landscaping for Hastings Properties

On rural properties in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region, septic systems occupy significant land area, a conventional absorption field for a 4-bedroom home can cover 150-400 square metres. That ground doesn’t need to be an eyesore, but it also can’t be planted with anything you like. The wrong plant choices, particularly aggressive-rooting native trees common in coastal and hinterland NSW, can destroy absorption trenches in a few years and lead to a very expensive replacement.

The absorption area of your septic system needs vegetation to prevent erosion and surface compaction, but must be kept clear of deep-rooted plants. Shallow-rooted grass (turf or native groundcovers) is ideal over trenches. Keep all trees and large shrubs at least 3-5 metres from the absorption area edge, and significantly further for water-seeking species like willows, banksias, and paperbarks. The tank itself needs to stay accessible, no planting or paving over lids.

Why plants matter for septic system health

Over the absorption area: The trench soil needs:

  • Adequate sun and wind to promote evapotranspiration (plants drawing moisture up from the trench zone)
  • Shallow-rooted ground cover to hold soil against erosion without compressing the trench gravel
  • No shading that keeps the soil constantly moist (which worsens anaerobic conditions and biomat)

What damages the system:

  • Deep roots that penetrate the trench gravel or pipe perforations, leading to blockages and structural damage
  • Heavy root structures that physically compress the trench gravel and reduce permeability
  • Trees and shrubs that pump large volumes of water from the soil, drying it unevenly and creating ground movement
  • Paving, decking, or compacted surfaces over the absorption area that prevent oxygen exchange with the soil

Plants to avoid near the absorption area

The worst offenders combine aggressive water-seeking roots with fast growth:

Avoid entirely within 5 metres of the trench edge:

  • Willows (Salix spp.), notorious root invaders; responsible for countless blocked drains and trench destructions across NSW
  • Paperbarks (Melaleuca spp.), beautiful native, but aggressive shallow roots that spread extensively; common across the Hastings coastal zone
  • Swamp mahogany (Eucalyptus robusta), common in the Hastings coastal lowlands; roots follow water sources actively
  • Brush box (Lophostemon confertus), popular in garden centres, but woody spreading roots are problematic near drainage
  • Bamboo, extremely aggressive rhizome spread; never plant bamboo near any septic infrastructure
  • Poplar and cottonwood, same water-seeking root behaviour as willow

Avoid within 3 metres of the tank and pipes:

Safe options for over and around the absorption area

Best choices over the trench zone:

  • Native grasses and sedges (shallow-rooted): Themeda triandra (kangaroo grass), Microlaena stipoides (weeping grass), and Poa labillardieri (blue tussock grass) are excellent Hastings-native options. Shallow roots, hardy in coastal NSW climate, low maintenance.
  • Kikuyu and couch grass turf: Commonly used on absorption areas because the roots are shallow and the dense turf provides good erosion control and evapotranspiration. Mow regularly to prevent thatch build-up.
  • Buffalo grass: Slower-spreading than kikuyu but good for coastal areas; handles the Hastings climate well.
  • Low native groundcovers: Hibbertia scandens (guinea flower, not tree form), Pratia pedunculata, and Myoporum parvifolium (creeping boobialla) are all appropriate for over a well-functioning absorption area.

Plants for the buffer zone (2-5 metres from trench edge):

  • Ornamental grasses: Lomandra longifolia (spiny-headed mat-rush) is appropriate at 2+ metres
  • Lavender, rosemary, and other Mediterranean herbs

What to keep out of the veggie garden:

NSW Health guidelines strongly advise against growing vegetables or fruit directly over or adjacent to absorption areas, even with AWTS-quality effluent. Keep food gardens at least 10 metres from the absorption area.

Landscaping rules around the septic tank

The tank itself needs to remain accessible for pump-outs and inspection. Never:

  • Pave, concrete, or tile over tank lids
  • Build decking, garden beds, or retaining walls that prevent access to the inspection riser
  • Plant shrubs or trees within 2 metres of the tank lids

Do:

  • Mark lid locations clearly (GPS coordinates, a visible marker, or a copy of the system drawing)
  • Keep the area over the lid clear of dense vegetation
  • Ensure inspection risers are raised to ground level (buried lids are a common issue on older Hastings rural properties)

Soil cover depth over trenches matters

Most trench systems in the Hastings region are installed with 200-400 mm of soil cover over the gravel. This is shallow, deep-digging gardening (spading to 400-600 mm) can expose or damage the distribution pipe. Any gardening over the absorption area should be restricted to surface-level planting without deep cultivation.

AWTS drip irrigation areas

Can I build a garden shed or cubby house over the septic absorption area?

No. Structures that create compacted surfaces, reduce oxygen exchange, or prevent maintenance access over the absorption area are not permitted. Any structure over the absorption area would also likely breach your PMHC OSSM approval conditions.

My garden has banksias and native shrubs planted over the trench area by a previous owner. What should I do?

Have a licensed contractor inspect the system, particularly the trench condition and outlet pipe. Root intrusion may have already occurred. If the system is functioning normally, a pragmatic approach is to monitor closely, pump more frequently, and plan for system replacement when the plants cause active problems.

How deep are the pipes in a conventional absorption trench?

The distribution pipe sits within the gravel layer, which is typically 300-600 mm below the soil surface. Soil cover over the gravel is 150-300 mm. So the pipe is roughly 450-900 mm below ground surface depending on the installation, shallower than most people assume.

Can I use the absorption area land for anything practical?

Yes, shallow-rooted lawn is ideal, and the area can be used for low-activity recreation (no vehicle traffic, which compresses the trench gravel). Some Hastings property owners use the absorption area for native wildflower meadows. Keep it simple, keep it shallow-rooted, and keep access to tank lids clear.
