Septic tank additives, enzymes and bacterial cultures are a multi-million dollar industry built on one simple fact: septic tanks make owners nervous. The claim is always some variation of “add this monthly and avoid costly pump-outs.” What the independent evidence actually says is more straightforward: a healthy septic tank already contains billions of naturally occurring bacteria, and most additives provide little to no measurable benefit. What septic additives claim to do
The septic additive market broadly divides into three product types:
Biological additives (bacteria sachets, enzyme powders, probiotic blends): Claim to introduce or boost the microbial population inside the tank, improving breakdown of solids and reducing sludge accumulation.
Enzymatic additives (enzyme concentrates, liquid enzyme treatments): Claim to accelerate the breakdown of fats, proteins and carbohydrates by introducing specific enzymes. Often combined with bacterial cultures.
Chemical additives (solvents, surfactants, some “drain openers”): Claim to dissolve grease and break up clogs in the inlet line or the tank itself. These are the most controversial category and the one most commonly discouraged by councils and environmental regulators.
Marketing typically promises one or more of: reduced pumping frequency, elimination of odours, restoration of “failing” trenches, and improved overall system performance.
What the independent evidence says
Multiple independent reviews of septic tank additive literature, including assessments published by university extension services and environmental agencies in Australia and internationally, have reached broadly similar conclusions:
- A properly functioning septic tank with a normal household waste stream already has an established microbial population that is well adapted to the environment. Adding more bacteria from a sachet does not measurably increase breakdown rates.
- Most biological additives do not survive the transition from the product packaging to the tank environment. Anaerobic conditions in the primary tank, pH variation, and competition from established populations typically limit the benefit.
- Enzymatic products may produce short-term improvements in grease breakdown but do not reduce long-term sludge accumulation rates in controlled studies.
- No additive tested in controlled conditions has been shown to reliably reduce the frequency of required pump-outs.
The key word in a lot of additive advertising is “supports” or “enhances”, vague enough to be unfalsifiable but specific enough to sound like a scientific claim.
Why NSW councils generally discourage some additives
Some additives, particularly chemical solvents and surfactants marketed as “drain cleaners” or “trench restorers,” are actively discouraged or restricted in NSW. The concerns are:
Kill the good bacteria. Harsh chemical additives can disrupt the microbial community that makes the primary tank function. A tank treated with a strong solvent may produce effluent that is less treated than normal, loading the trenches with material they cannot handle.
Trench damage. Some chemical additives pass through the tank and into the absorption trench, where they can alter soil structure, interfere with the biomat layer that provides secondary treatment, and increase the mobility of contaminants in groundwater.
Groundwater and environmental contamination. On the Mid North Coast, where many blocks are close to coastal waterways, wetlands and water tables, chemical additives that mobilise in the soil are a genuine environmental concern. Council officers assessing failed systems will sometimes ask whether the owner has been using additives.

Rather than spending money on additives, the following owner practices have documented, measurable impacts on septic system performance and longevity:
Control what goes in. The single biggest driver of premature trench failure and tank problems is overloading with materials the system cannot process. Pump on schedule. The sludge layer in the primary tank accumulates regardless of additive use. The only way to remove it is a physical pump-out. Waiting too long allows solids to overflow into the trenches. Understanding how often your tank needs pumping and booking it accordingly is the most cost-effective maintenance action available.
Spread water load. Running the washing machine, dishwasher and showers all at once creates a hydraulic surge that pushes solids through the tank faster than normal. Spreading water use across the day reduces the load on the system at any given moment.
Use septic-compatible cleaning products. Standard dishwashing liquid and laundry powder in moderate quantities are generally fine. Bleach used sparingly for toilet cleaning is not catastrophic. The problem is heavy daily use of antibacterial cleaners, drain cleaners and disinfectants that systematically reduce the tank’s bacterial population.

When someone tells you an additive will avoid a pump-out
Be sceptical. There is no additive that eliminates the need for periodic pump-outs. Solids accumulate in the primary tank chamber through entirely physical processes: heavy particles sink, light particles float, and the clarified middle layer flows to the trenches. No enzyme or bacteria changes this fundamental physics.
If your tank is currently overdue for a pump-out and someone recommends an additive as a cheaper alternative, it is not a meaningful substitute. An overdue pump-out that is delayed further increases the risk of solids overflow into the trenches, which typically costs far more to remediate than a routine pump-out would have.
